Development of a radial compressor for a micro gas turbine

Turbo Science, as part of a cooperative research and development group, is developing a micro gas turbine that has an electrical output power of 30kW. Radial machines are best suited for this dimension where, even with small to medium mass flow rates, high pressure ratios can be achieved. Our main task is the dimensioning, design and test of the turbo group.

Starting from the design mass flow rate, total pressure ratio and specific speed, a basic geometry of impeller, bladed diffusor and volute is designed by 1D-dimensioning techniques and verified by CFD calculations. The second step consisted of the parameterization of the basic geometry and 3D optimization to ensure an optimal design. In each design step, the structural integrity of the radial compressor impeller was checked using FEM simulation to ensure safe operation of the developed components.
